Ernest Owusu Bempah, Deputy Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has demanded the arrest of those responsible for the publication of the controversial ‘Agyapadie’ document.
He condemned the document as a malicious attempt to undermine the credibility of the NPP leadership, claiming the document is filled with falsehoods aimed at discrediting the NPP government.
He urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to take immediate action to identify and arrest those behind the publication.
Mr. Bempah specifically called for the publishers of the document, including those behind the Awake News platform, to face legal consequences stating, “We cannot allow the NDC to perpetuate such brazen falsehoods and then claim it is just politics.”
During a press conference on Monday, Mr. Bempah argued that the dissemination of such material is not only politically motivated but also detrimental to the nation’s democratic process and stability.
He emphasized that spreading misinformation and defamatory content constitutes a criminal offense, as it seeks to incite public unrest and tarnish the government’s image without factual support.
“Maintaining the integrity of the political process is crucial,” Mr. Bempah said, noting that misinformation erodes public trust in democratic institutions.
He also called for a focus on fair and respectful campaigning, urging political actors to address issues and policies rather than engaging in smear tactics.
Concluding his statement, he stressed the urgency for the IGP to hold those responsible accountable to deter future attempts to create confusion and undermine the political system.
