The former president and the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has assured to improve the free Senior High School policy if elected as the next president in the December 7 election.

Addressing the rank and file of his party at Tamale on Saturday, June 27, the 2024 flagbearer of the NDC said he will be committed to working hard to remove the obnoxious double-track system so that all children can go to school and close from school at the same time.

Former president Mahama vented his opposition to the situation where students come home and stay for four months before they go back to school.

“So, we’re going to improve the free SHS. We’re going to sit with the teachers and the parents and all the stakeholders and together we will forge an implementation plan that will make the free SHS better.”

On the issue of Schools under trees, the 2024 flagbearer of the NDC said his party will continue to remove schools under trees.

He said Professor Mills administration which he served as the Vice President started the removal of schools under the Trees programme which provided a good school environment for hundreds of thousands of children.

“We’re going to continue the removal of schools under trees and improve our basic education”.

For tertiary students, Mr. Dramani Mahama said when elected into office as the next president, a part of university lands is going to be carved out to be used for building students’ hostels to aid ease accommodation issues and related challenges posed to students.

He noted that there are several instances where students going for accommodation outside the university have either been knocked down by vehicles, attacked by armed robbers, or have found themselves in danger.

“We will say to your universities, do carve out a portion of your land. we’re going to work with the private sector to build student hostels so that you will live on campus and not live elsewhere and suffer the danger of travelling to and from home to school. We want our tertiary students to live on campus so that they can stay on campus and learn. There are many, many things that we intend to do, Mr. Mahama added.
