President Akufo-Addo has nominated Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, a legal academic, and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a Court of Appeal judge, to the Supreme Court bench.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the nominations, approved by the Judicial Council, await parliamentary vetting as constitutionally mandated.
Prof Frimpong Oppong will join Prof Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu as one of the legal academics on Ghana’s apex court, while, Justice Bernasko Essah, with her extensive experience as a State Attorney, private legal practitioner, and Justice of the High Court and Court of Appeal, will bring considerable expertise to the Supreme Court.
This nomination follows a request from Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo for five additional judges to address the Supreme Court’s overwhelming caseload.
Despite the Chief Justice’s recommendations, which included Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe and four others, these names were not part of the President’s latest nominations, raising questions about their status.
If approved by Parliament, the Supreme Court will have 17 justices.
