The Guinness World Records (GWR) has recognized Nigerian woman Chidinma Modupe Okafor as the new holder of the record for the longest crocheting marathon.
A post on the GWR website states that Chidinma’s new record, which she achieved by continually crocheting a white dinner gown for an astonishing 72 hours (three days), twice the previous mark.
She has now beaten Alessandra Hayden of the United States, who held the previous record of 34 hours and 7 minutes since 2021.
Since she was a young child, Chidinma has crafted clothing and accessories for her friends and loved ones using crochets.
“I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits,” she said.
She disclosed that in order to successfully set the record, she underwent a difficult experience. She worked on her crochet nonstop for the whole endeavor.
Chidinma finished one ball of yarn and had to quickly move on to the next without much delay.
Chidinma disclosed that in order to increase her endurance and attention for the difficult job, she underwent rigorous training and mental preparation prior to the record-breaking effort.

Similar to all previous attempts to set the “longest marathon” record, Chidinma was only permitted to take two hours of rest per day, or five minutes of crocheting every hour. She was only allowed to eat, sleep, use the restroom, and change her clothes during these breaks.“My preparation for the record attempt involved rigorous training and mental conditioning. It also required physical endurance and strategizing to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue,” she explained

“Additionally, logistics such as arranging for sufficient yarn with support staff were crucial for the uninterrupted progress of the attempt.”
Her original plan for the record attempt was to crochet a bridal gown, but as time went on and she became weary of it, she changed her mind and decided to make it into a dinner gown that could be worn to different events.
“I couldn’t do extra hours,” she said.
The Nigerian record breaker Helen Williams (longest wig and widest wig), Ewa Cole (longest marathon singing Christmas songs), Clara Chizoba Kronborg (longest interviewing marathon), Tonye Solomon (most steps climbed on a ladder while balancing a football on her head), and Chidinma (world record) will all be added to Hilda Baci’s renowned cook-a-thon.
