Alice Erza, Deputy Head of the Drug Demand Reduction Unit at the Narcotics Control Commission in Cape Coast, has revealed June 26th as the date dedicated to addressing drug use and abuse.
Under the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” Madam Erza emphasized the severe and enduring impacts of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities.
Highlighting the significance of prevention strategies, she stressed that proactive measures are crucial in tackling the complexities associated with drug use stating “Every year on June 26th, we unite to deliberate on drug use and abuse. This year, our focus is on preventing such behaviors,” she stated.
Madam Erza also underscored the pivotal roles of media, communities, opinion leaders, schools, and churches in combating drug abuse and providing support to those affected.
She identified substances like petrol, shisha, super glue, and various inhalers as gateway drugs that can lead users towards more harmful substances.
Addressing misconceptions about treatment, Madam Erza advised against seeking spiritual solutions for substance use disorders. “Individuals diagnosed with substance use disorder should seek treatment at rehabilitation centers, not spiritual institutions,” she emphasized.
In a call to action, she urged the public to remain vigilant and proactive in educating others about the effects of drug use and supporting efforts to prevent substance abuse.
She also highlighted the financial burden of rehabilitation centers, emphasizing the importance of preventing substance abuse from occurring in the first place.
