A recent survey conducted by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) indicates strong support among NPP delegates for Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to be the running mate to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.
According to the NIB report, approximately 84% of respondents believe Dr. Opoku Prempeh is the ideal running mate due to his charisma and popularity among party members.
Out of 5,116 delegates surveyed regarding the potential running mate for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum received 10.16% support.
Also, the study showed that Dr. Opoku Prempeh secured 76.27% of the responses from executives polled.
Other notable figures considered for the role include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, Bryan Acheampong, Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.
The survey further highlighted a preference among participants for a male candidate.
With the 2024 general election approaching, Dr. Bawumia faces the task of selecting from prominent party members.
The survey also revealed a strong consensus that the running mate should hail from the Ashanti Region, underscoring regional preferences within the party.
However, the report also advises caution in his selection, citing concerns over his current role as Minister of Energy amidst ongoing power challenges in Ghana.
The NIB suggests that the government may need to take steps to bolster Dr. Prempeh’s credentials in managing the energy sector to strengthen the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
