The Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) have issued a week’s ultimatum to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) of Ghana.
The FWSC have until 21st June 2024 to address the unions’ claim of being unfairly excluded from the recent upward adjustment of the Vehicle Maintenance allowance that was given to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
In a joint press release yesterday, the union described the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) as an essential allowance which ensures the sustenance of staff members’ vehicles and enhances their effectiveness and productivity at work.
“The Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) is an essential allowance that aids in the maintenance of staff vehicles, which is crucial for the efficient and effective performance of our duties, ensures growth in productivity and enhance the generic welfare of senior members, Senior and Junior staff members” part of the statement read.
SSA-UoG, FUSSAG and TEWU-TUC have therefore demanded the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to immediately revise its decision and include the unions in the recent upward adjustment of the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance.
They are urging the FWSC to “Take immediate, sincere and pragmatic action to rectify this injustice and uphold the principles of fairness, equity and natural justice.
They add that FWSC must “Provide a fair and equitable VMA package that reflects the current situation for all Senior members, Senior Staff and Junior staff members within the University system.”
Refusal of the FWSC to heed their demand will compel SSA-UoG, FUSSAG and TEWU-TUC to embark on an industrial strike effective June 21, 2024.
