The Chinese Confucius Institute of the University of Cape Coast has partnered with the Central Regional Coordinating Council (CRCC) and the Chinese community in Ghana to mark a successful United Nations International Chinese Language Day at the Holy Child Senior High School in Cape Coast.
International Chinese Language Day is celebrated worldwide to promote educational and cultural cooperation between people and cultures.
This year, the 15th UN International Chinese Language Day celebration is focused on empowering the Girlchild under the theme: Building a Bridge for Mutual Learning Among Civilizations through Girl-Child Empowerment.
Speaking at the sidelines of the programme, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast, Professor OU Yamei reiterated the commitment of the Institute to creating opportunities for girls to achieve their dreams through Chinese language study.
She revealed that her outfit plans to extend its programmes to more schools in the Central Region, expressing hope in establishing teaching centres in the Senior High Schools.
“…We are glad to do this kind of programme in other places. More schools especially senior high schools will join us to become a teaching centre to start the Chinese language teaching and put them into their school curriculum,” she stated.
The Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan expressed gratitude for the partnership between the Central Regional Coordinating Council (CRCC) and the Confucius Institute of University Cape Coast in teaching the Chinese Language among selected schools in the region.
She mentioned that CRCC worked closely with the institute to implement teaching the Chinese language in selected schools, including Holy Child Secondary School, with the support of the Chinese Community.
Madam Marigold Asan reiterated that the aim is to equip young girls with skills to prepare them for the future and encourage their participation in various fields.
The headmistress of the Holy Child Senior High School, Mrs. Linda Appiah was also grateful to the Confucius Institute of UCC, CRCC and the Chinese Community in Ghana for hosting this year’s International Chinese Language Day at the school recognizing the importance of Chinese language education for girls.
The event featured captivating performances by students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast who displayed their talents through Chinese plays, dance, martial arts, songs and dances.
Other guests who graced the event included the Central Regional Director of Education, Mr. Emmanuel Essuman; Mr. Tang Hong, the President of Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, and some Chinese nationals.
