EduSpots, a UK and Ghanaian registered NGO, has launched its digitalization process distributing over 100 tablets and laptops to volunteers named ‘Catalysts’ from 30 underserved communities across 15 regions in Ghana.
The project aims to equip over 300 catalysts with digital skills and tools to ignite educational opportunities for over 10,000 young learners through a network of 50 community-led education spaces (Library).
EduSpots pioneered the Digital Launch Day on April 17 at its training centre at Elmina and crowned it with a panel discussion on “Digital skills for a more equitable future.”
The panel comprised of the University of Ghana, Ministries of Education and other non-governmental organizations.
Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, University of Ghana, and National Science and Maths Quiz Host commended Eduspots on this initiative to develop the learner’s skills.
To her, the current global trends demand the acquisition of digital skills in the fourth industrial revolution dominated by technology and digital tools.
“So, we ought to commend them for this initiative in helping communities to stay relevant in the fourth industrial revolution.”
However, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann advised them to properly use the devices in learning the needed technological information available in the digital era to enable them to contribute and compete in the global space.
The Central Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr. Nana Kwame Appiakubi also commended EduSpot for the initiative and their contribution towards the Ghana Library Authority.
As part of their efforts towards enhancing digitalization, the Ghana Library Authority partnered with EduSpot and uploaded its digitalization project; the library app on distributed devices to augment the digitalization skill learning among the communities.
Mr. Appiahkubi indicated that the app has a syllabus, videos, textbooks and story book, among others that will help in the learning process.
The launch follows the ‘Drive for Digitalisation’ viral campaign Wanderlust Ghana led in support of EduSpots in July 2023. The Wanderlust Ghana team drove 10,000km from Accra to London, partly to raise awareness of digital inequity, raising $20,000 for EduSpots in support of the procurement of digital devices
Richard Anim, from Wanderlust Ghana, commented: “The emergence of the fourth Industrial Revolution means that students across the globe must be empowered with the skills to make them fit for purpose for the future of work. The work of EduSpots across Ghana helps to push this agenda and Wanderlust was pleased to support this initiative.”
Meanwhile, Aduko Savera, an EduLit club member at Kalpohin Spot, Tamale commented: “I believe if students have the opportunity to use these kinds of devices in our Spot, learning will be much easier and fun and many students will be dropping to the library.” Seidu Yahya, Catalyst at Ejura Spot commented: “Having access to technology will improve the problem-solving abilities of our learners and create independent thinkers who explore community challenges and develop the solutions for them.”
Other dignitaries present at the launch were Mr Aaron Akwaboah, Director for Strategy and Innovation at the Ministry of Education; Ms Nana Afua Serwaa, ‘Shecanic’, Wanderlust Ghana; Mrs Gifty Ghansah, Headmistress of African Science Academy; Mr Charles Antipem, CEO and Co-Founder of Dext Technology.
