John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to prioritize resolving issues surrounding the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy if elected.
This commitment comes amidst growing concerns about the policy’s execution and funding.
Mr. John Mahama announced his intention to convene a stakeholder forum on education within his first 100 days as president.
This forum aims to gather input from stakeholders, including teachers, parents, students, and educational experts, on how to improve and deliver quality education in the country.
“We will hold a stakeholder dialogue on education within the first 100 days of me becoming president. It will focus on the implementation challenges of the Free SHS policy and ways to improve financing and teaching at the basic school level,” Mahama stated.
Addressing representatives from various teacher unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Mahama outlined his plans to strengthen the education sector. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and dialogue in addressing the challenges facing education in Ghana.
The announcement has been welcomed by NAGRAT and GNAT, who see it as a positive step towards addressing the concerns of teachers and improving the education system.
“We are pleased to hear that Mr. Mahama plans to engage stakeholders on education issues, including the Free SHS policy. We believe that dialogue and collaboration are essential in finding solutions to the challenges facing our education system,” said a representative from NAGRAT.
GNAT also expressed support for Mahama’s initiative, emphasizing the importance of addressing the concerns raised by teachers and other stakeholders.
They hope to participate in the stakeholder forum proposed by Mr. Mahama believing that “through constructive dialogue, we can find ways to improve education delivery in Ghana.”
Mahama’s commitment to addressing education challenges and engaging with stakeholders has been seen as a positive step towards improving the quality of education in Ghana.
