Reyah International has recently embarked on a beach clean-up exercise along the shores of Cape Coast to reduce plastic waste and enhance water cleanliness.
The international and non-governmental organization focuses on volunteerism, women and youth empowerment, and biodiversity conservation to raise awareness of waste management and environmental protection.
Benjamin Ato Keelson, the executive director of Reyah International in an interview with ATLFMNEWS indicated that the organization is poised to reach its goal of offering solid sensitization to the public on waste management and protecting the environment.
He mentioned that the organization’s mission is to raise one million biodiversity conservation ambassadors for Reyah.
“So, we have established clubs under Reyah Biocon Society in some schools in Cape Coast, where we train the young ones to be conscious about the environment,” he said.
Highlighting the purpose of the cleanup campaign, the assistant programme officer of the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency, Haneef Forson emphasized the importance of safeguarding beaches.
This includes engaging workers at the various restaurants; rest stops and shops along the shores to intensify awareness of the clean environment along the beach.
“So, we tried to engage the workers at the various restaurants. We spoke to their managers that we need their workforce and also some tools. So, wherever we go, that particular beach, we engage the workers there. We work along their shores. Then we move to the next one,” he continued.
Haneef Forson announced that the organization would also embark on subsequent clean-up campaigns and encouraged the neighbouring communities to support this exercise in his final words saying,” Definitely we will have a follow-up on it.
The clean-up exercise is the second edition of the Reyah International clean-up campaign after the first was done in Accra, Kasoa.
Haneef Forson mentioned that they seek to intensify the awareness creation of a clean environment in their subsequent campaigns.
The organization received some assistance from both members of the organization and some international volunteers from Spain who all helped out in the clean-up campaign.
