The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed heads of schools to keep their facilities open despite the strike action by the three teacher Unions.
In a statement, GES directed the regional and district directors “to mobilize their Management teams to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in schools.”
Three teacher unions; the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) declared a nationwide strike action over government’s failure to address pressing issues affecting teacher’s ability to work effectively.
Addressing the press at the NAGRAT headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, they mentioned that negotiations to update a collective agreement to address issues of allowances for teachers in remote areas, entertainment and housing/rent allowances have proven futile.
They emphasized that government also failed to renegotiate and finalize the agreement by February 29, 2024, after it expired in 2023.
“Thus, the new Collective Agreement stands un-negotiated, and we raised this concern in our letter to the Director General, GES, dated February 29, 2024, and also informed the National Labour Commission (NIC),” President of GNAT Rev. Isaac Owusu who addressed the pressed added.
Meanwhile, GES says it is keenly monitoring the situation urging parents to remain calm.
The service asked the heads of schools to closely monitor all students who report to school until further guidance by the management of GES.
