In his penultimate State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Akufo-Addo highlighted achievements in debt restructuring and infrastructure development, while reaffirming his commitment to economic stability.
In a solemn yet optimistic tone, President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered his State of the Nation Address, outlining the nation’s journey through economic challenges and showcasing significant progress made in various sectors.
Addressing Parliament, he reflected on the turbulent negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that dominated discussions in 2023 while acknowledging the necessity of implementing unpopular tax measures to restore stability to the economy, emphasizing the temporary nature of the sacrifices made.
The President then pivoted to the success achieved in comprehensive debt restructuring efforts, both domestically and externally.
He also proudly announced the successful exchange of bonds worth GH¢203 billion, resulting in a historic Staff Level Agreement with the IMF.
Moreover, he expressed gratitude to various stakeholders for their contributions to this significant milestone.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to completing priority projects, President Akufo-Addo unveiled plans for infrastructure development across the nation.
Notable projects include the completion of the Kumasi International Airport and various road and railway projects.
He also announced alternative funding secured for the reconstruction of the La General Hospital Project, signifying progress toward modernizing healthcare infrastructure.
Despite recent changes in leadership within the Finance Ministry, President Akufo-Addo reassured the nation of the government’s unwavering commitment to implementing IMF agreements and restoring economic growth.
Encouragingly, macroeconomic indicators reflect positive trends, with reductions in inflation and stable currency depreciation rates.
President Akufo-Addo reiterated that government is dedicated to protecting the welfare of the poor and vulnerable, highlighting the continued support for essential social programs.
As the nation looks towards the future, optimism abounds, fueled by the resilience and determination of the Ghanaian people.
