Following the recent shine on the University of Cape Coast for appointing the visually impaired Mr. Carruthers Tetteh as a law lecturer, another milestone has been achieved.
To add to the list is Ben Bishop Nyanihorba Ayamba, the first-ever visually impaired to graduate with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) during the 7th session of the 56th Congregation at UCC.
Dr. Ayamba was among the 103 PhD candidates honoured on Friday 26th January 2024 at the New Examination Centre at the North Campus of UCC.
Dr. Ben Bishop Nyanihorba Ayamba, originally from Pusiga in the Upper East Region, tragically lost his sight in an accident in August 1995.
Despite this life-altering event, Dr Ayamba showed remarkable resilience and determination in pursuing his education. He adapted to his new circumstances by learning braille at the Presbyterian Training College in Akropong for his ordinary-level studies.
Following his rehabilitation at the School of the Blind in Akropong, Dr. Ayamba continued his academic journey. After completing his training at the Teachers Training College in 1999, he went on to further his education at the University of Cape Coast (UCC). In 2001, he enrolled at UCC for his undergraduate studies and successfully graduated in 2004 with a degree in English and Psychology.
Dr Ayamba dedicated two years to teaching at the Junior High School at Ntonso before returning to UCC to advance his education. He pursued a Master of Philosophy in Guidance and Counseling, further showcasing his commitment to education and personal development.
In recognition of his academic achievements and skills, Dr Ayamba was appointed to teach English at the Mampong Technical College of Education.
The pinnacle of his academic journey arrived in January 2024 when he was adorned with a red gown signifying his higher degree attainment.
His journey, marked by perseverance and dedication, serves as an inspiring example of overcoming adversity through education and unwavering determination.
Award
Dr. Ben Bishop Nyanihorba Ayamba received a $2,000 cash prize from Dr. Sir Sam Jonah, UCC’s Chancellor, in recognition of his commendable achievement.
Physically challenged graduands
Also, Mr. David Osei Pipim, from the Department of Communication Studies, clinched the accolade for Best Graduating Student in Journalism during the 6th session of the 56th Congregation dedicated to graduates from the College of Humanities and Legal Studies.
Mr. David Osei Pipim garnered an impressive CGPA of 3.6 and additionally stood out as the Best Graduating Student in Communication Ethics.
Dr. Wisdom Quaiku, a physically challenged student of the University also graduated with a doctoral degree in Development Studies.
Many other Persons Living with Disabilities also graduated with various certificates during the 1st to 7th sessions of the 56th Congregation recently held at the University of Cape Coast.
