DJs play a vital role in helping singers become famous by spreading the word about their songs through constant playback, according to Mark Okraku Mantey, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
The minister issued a warning, stating that artists’ prospects of success in the cutthroat music industry could be compromised by disrespect or tense relationships with DJs.
Mr. Okraku Mantey called for mutual respect and brought attention to the feelings expressed by DJs who feel undervalued and disrespected by artists despite having a crucial role in promoting musicians. He emphasized that both parties should recognize and value their respective roles in the music ecosystem.
The minister made this request at a recent stakeholder engagement that the Ministry of Information hosted with the goal of gaining perspectives from artists and other industry participants to support the #playghana campaign.

“Performers, you need the DJs; respect them,” the minister said in his speech. If you don’t respect them, you won’t be able to reach your goals.
“To the DJs, I know some of your challenges…you say the artistes don’t respect you. .you make them stars and they ignore you afterwards. For the sake of Ghana, please let sleeping dogs lie”
Additionally, Mr. Okraku Mantey urged all parties involved in the music business to band together in support of the #playghana campaign.
In order to provide native music with the credit and exposure it merits, he called on churches, Gospel radio and TV programs, and presenters to intentionally feature Ghanaian content.
The #playghana Initiative
The #playghana campaign, which promotes the promotion of Ghanaian music, is supported by important organizations such as the Ministry of Information, Ministry of Arts and Tourism, Ghana Folkloric Board, experienced and up-and-coming musicians, DJs, and others.
