Agya Koo, a veteran actor from Ghana, has said that his refusal to take roles at the time contributed to the downfall of the Kumawood film industry.
Speaking on the radio program Ezra FM in Kumasi, Agya Koo asserted that his exclusion at the time had a profound effect on the industry, especially since he is still the most marketable actor in Ghana.
“They sidelined me, and now they blame the emergence of CDs for the collapse of the industry, which is not true. But they will not accept this fact,” Agya Koo lamented.

The seasoned actor remembered the formerly thriving Kumawood sector, pointing out that his name was widely associated with Ghanaian cinema, particularly among the country’s diaspora, which included the USA.
He emphasized that the following crucial question would always come up in discussions concerning Ghanaian films:
Is Agya Koo a member of the ensemble? Until he was sidelined, he claimed that this demonstrated his unparalleled marketability and influence at the time.
“Though I was not the only one acting at the time when people wanted to watch Ghanaian movies, they mentioned the name Agya Koo. Why didn’t they ask for someone else’s name?” he stated.
The rise of CDs, which some business insiders attribute to Agya Koo’s demise, coincided with Kumawood’s downfall. Agya Koo, however, insists that his exclusion was more important.
“The emergence of CDs might have contributed, but it’s not the main reason. I was the one pulling people to the cinemas, and when I was sidelined, the industry started to decline,” Agya Koo asserted.
