Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta says government has budgeted GHS 220 million to support the relief phase for communities affected by the Akosombo spillage.
In addition, government has requested funding from the World Bank and the Global Shield Against Climate Risk Fund.
The funding will support the victims’ restoration of livelihoods, compensation and resettlement, as well as reconstruction of infrastructure in the affected communities.
Announcing this on the floor of parliament while presenting on 2024 Budget he named “NKUNIM SPEECH” Mr. Ofori Atta emphasized the devasting impact of the Akosombo Dam Spillage which caused flooding in downstream and upstream areas, affecting communities in the Volta, Eastern, Greater Accra, Savanna, Oti and Bono-East regions.
The finance minister expressed government’s commitment to providing relief and support for those affected by the flood while also placing emphasis on the importance of climate policy and financing to address the long-term effects of climate change on victims of natural disasters.
Mr. Ofori Atta acknowledged the immense contribution of Ghanaians who empathized and showed support to the victims of the flood.
He also laid emphasis on the fact that despite the devastation the spillage caused, no lives had been lost.
