President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Dwumfour says the association shall fight back fiercely against attacks on journalists and media houses.
Speaking at the 27th GJA Awards ceremony, Mr. Dwumfour expressed worry over the rise in attacks and assaults on journalists and media houses in the past five years.
According to him, 45 cases of assaults on media petitioners and institutions were recorded between the years 2019 and 2023 with October 2023 having the worst data of an average of one attack per week.
He, therefore, assured of the association’s resilience to fight back against any further attempted attack on the media or journalists in Ghana.
“We shall fight back fiercely against such attacks, and in so doing, we shall deploy our strongest weapons, including taking legal action, laying down our pens and microphones, and calling for blackout on bodies, corporates and individuals that attack media, practitioners or institutions,” he continued.
Mr. Alberta Dwumfour warned individuals who attack journalists and media houses to desist from such acts as the GJA will not hesitate to take the necessary actions against such perpetrators.
The 27th GJA Awards constituted 34 categories including best in news reporting, sports, health, education, documentaries, illegal mining, and investigative journalism, among others.
