Kwame Nkrumah should be the yardstick of good governance – CPP

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has urged the citizenry to reflect on the developmental agenda of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and use his records as basis to hold governments to account.

The party said Dr Nkrumah’s strategic investments in critical sectors of the economy and industrialisation drive put the country on the path of economic independence until his “painful” overthrow in 1966.

In an interview with the media during the commemoration of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day yesterday at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the General Secretary of the CPP, Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah said Dr Nkrumah should be the yardstick of good governance.

“His legacy should be a benchmark for every government in this country. Whatever he did should be the benchmark that we should measure every government. And we of the CPP are prepared to take over power and change things in this nation.”

She urged the citizenry to reflect on the current state of Ghana’s economy and juxtapose it with the achievements of Dr. Nkrumah, who made a determined effort to make the country a great nation after gaining her independence in 1957.

She stated that the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah has been in tatters and for that matter CPP is the only party that can ensure the realization of his dreams and legacies.

Nana Yaa Jantuah said the present state of the Ghanaian economy, which was characterised by higher inflation, weak local currency, and unattainable debts, reflected the extent to which the dream to achieve total economic independence had fallen apart.

Meanwhile, at the 2-day Nkrumah Mandela Leadership Conference held at the Cedi Conference Center in the University of Ghana Legon dubbed ‘The Osagyefo and The Madiba: Global Africa in Search for Transformational Leadership in the 21st Century’. Pan-Africanist and founder of the socialist movement of Ghana, Kwesi Pratt Junior emphasised the need to have a long-term development agenda to reshape Africa.

He said “We struggle in order to change our conditions of poverty and underdevelopment. We struggle to build a new and united Africa. An Africa in which no child will go to bed on an empty stomach. That is our challenge.”

On his part, Renowned cardiologist Professor Frimpong Boateng stressed Kwame Nkrumah’s contribution to infrastructure in Ghana remains unmatched by any administration to date.

Prof. Boateng noted that Nkrumah advocated for scientific thinking among Ghanaians and showed this in his vertical and horizontal integrative approach to developing infrastructure for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
