The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has held a Special Congregation to award honorary doctorate degrees to 7 distinguished individuals with a call on them to do more for the development of the University .

The conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees on distinguished individuals is a rich tradition of academic institutions that has been in existence over 500 years.

Since UCC was established, it has conferred this special honorary degree on 51 outstanding individuals including Former President His Excellency John Agyekum Kuffuor, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, His Excellency Thabo Mbeki, Prof Patrick Lumumba, among many others.

Congratulating the fresh Honourees, the Chairman of UCC’s governing council, Professor Obeng Mireku stated that “I would therefore like to congratulate all of you on having caught the eye of the Governing Council of the University. It is for me significant that these awards are happening on the eves of the diamond Jubilee as a University. A period that has seen the University grow in stature within the global league of University Institutions.”

Professor Obeng Mireku

“As I do with all Alumni, I urge you to remember your alma mater wherever you will be and in whatever capacity you will find yourselves. This is certainly an added reason for you to do more for this University now your alma mater,” he added.

He further advocated that they help open more doors of opportunity for the university through their connections and networks.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of UCC, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong made a sincere appeal to two of the honourees Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh and Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong as well as the current CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Mr Opoku-Ahweneeh Danaquah to assist the university to complete one of the university’s stalled projects, the Institute for Law and Governance Complex which is worth five million US Dollars ($5,000,000).

Sod for the construction of this building complex being financed by the GNPC as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility was cut in August 2021.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the institute will be a place to train more human capital for national development once completed.

Delivering the acceptance speech on behalf of the honourees, Professor Daniel Asuah Wubah indicated that “we are filled with gratitude and a profound sense of appreciation for the recognition that UCC has bestowed on us.”

He said the awards are not just a recognition of their achievements but also an inspiration to do greater things.

He further threw a challenge to his fellow honourees not to forget the weight of the responsibility the honorary degrees come with.

According to him “it is a call to action. A reminder of the tremendous impact that we can make when we combine knowledge with compassion and use it to press the challenges facing our society today.”

He added that to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible and to use their talents and influence to make a positive impact on others, they must be committed to strive together to create a world that is more “inclusive, more equitable and sustainable.”
