The Association of Economics Students (AES) at the University of Cape Coast has launched its 25th anniversary with a call on students studying Economics to maximize Ghana’s resources and sustain the country’s development path.
They are to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to create an environment that will aid them in helping the country on that path.
“It is our responsibility to apply the knowledge that we acquire to create the kind of livelihood, the kind of system, the kind of environment that would enable us to maximize our resources and sustain the development path and agenda of our country, for that matter, our continent.” Dr Deaodat Adenutsi emphasized.
Making the call to the Economic students at the launch, Dr Deaodat Adenutsi who is the Founding PRO of the Association, stressed that the role of Economic students, professionals and practitioners is very relevant in shaping a prosperous Ghana.
Thus, he encouraged the students not to let their journey as economists end within the confines of their lecture rooms and bedrooms.
The launch of the Association’s 25th anniversary which was held in collaboration with the School of Economics, UCC was on the theme “Reducing Poverty through Macroeconomic Stability and Inclusive Development: The effective role of the 21st Century Economist.”
Touching on the appropriateness of the theme for the launch at a symposium that followed the launch of the anniversary, the Head of Research at the Bank of Ghana Dr. Philip Abradu-Otoo called on all to work towards achieving macroeconomic stability so they could withstand shocks when they arise.
He said “When you have strong macroeconomic conditions, it is good because it acts as a shock absorber to shocks that are coming in from outside to the domestic economy. And then these are amplified on the rest of the economy and we see that manifest in poverty.”
On his part, the President of the Association, Master Ekow Orleans De-Graft hopes the anniversary celebration will launch the association to a path that will enable them to achieve more in the future.
He emphasized that the celebration must be a ‘memorable tribute to our past, an inspiration for our present and a catalyst for an even brighter future.’
