Justice Gertrude Torkonoo will today be sworn in to officially begin her duties as the New Chief Justice of Ghana.
President Akufo Addo is expected to do the swearing-in today which will make her the third female Chief Justice in the history of Ghana after Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
President Akufo Addo nominated Justice Gertrude Torkonoo in April 2023 to succeed the 14th Chief Justice in Ghana, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah after his retirement from service on May 24, 2023.
On May 26, 2023, the Appointments Committee of Parliament vetted her and later unanimously endorsed her candidacy.
Following this, Ghana’s Parliament on June 7, officially approved the nomination of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as the new Chief Justice.
With a career spanning over two decades, Justice Torkornoo, born on 11th September 1962, is no stranger to the judiciary.
She joined the Judicial Service in 2004 as one of the first Justices of the Commercial Division of the High Court and has been actively involved in the core reform agenda and activities of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service of Ghana (JSG) since 2005.
She was nominated to the Supreme Court in November 2019 and received parliamentary approval in December 2019. She was sworn in on 17 December 2019.
