The long-awaited Science Journalism Ghana Media Fellowship has commenced with a virtual meeting to train the first set of upcoming science writers and reporters.
This year’s maiden edition of the Science Journalism Ghana Fellowship started on April 23, 2023, with a virtual meeting held on Google Meets.
The meeting was moderated by the Founder and CEO of Science Journalism Ghana, Jessica Ahedor with the Co-Founder and CEO of Galaxy Aerospace Ghana, Victor Targborloh as the guest speaker of the meeting.
The meeting also featured 6 winners who were selected for the 2023 Science Journalism Ghana Media Fellowship and will be trained from April to July this year.
The main aim of this training is to provide the 6 winners an opportunity to gain experience in science reporting and showcase their reporting skills with regard to science-related issues of their choice. The winners will also be trained as ambassadors who will help create a culture of science journalism in Ghana.
Speaking on the importance of Science Journalism, Victor Targborloh stressed the need for the youth to play significant roles by focusing on developing the country through studies in agriculture, engineering, and health.
Mr. Targborloh highlighted that Science Journalism is very essential in educating young ones since the world is currently steered through science and Science technology.
According to him, all developed countries in the world today have reached greater heights through the use of advanced technology.
The meeting addressed the need for the 6 winners to advocate science journalism by being mouthpieces. This is to help provide knowledge to those who may not be privy to the importance of science education and its contribution to the development of a country.
Meanwhile, the Founder and CEO of Science Journalism Ghana, Jessica Ahedor revealed that Science Journalism Ghana has the vision to train new journalists who will be well-educated to write science-related stories.
‘The program is to help them with research skills and how to disseminate scientific information to the general public while touching on its facts,’ she said.
The 2023 maiden edition of the Science Journalism Media Fellowship was open to all journalism students who are willing to learn and are passionate about science journalism.
The program will cover topics such as sciencepreneurship, science reporting, science communication, and science ethics and would have several guest speakers who are well vexed in the field of science education to help train the 6 winners and to broaden their scope in science journalism.
