The president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for a collaborative effort of all Ghanaians in the quest to develop the country.
According to the president, the forbearers who fought to free the country from the shackles of colonialism and imperialism achieved that through unity, hence the need to come together as one people for the common goal of achieving a better country.
“Our forebears were united and strengthened in realizing one common purpose – the attainment of independence. It did not matter where they came from; it did not matter which tribe they belonged to; it did not matter which religious persuasion they subscribed to; and their standing in society certainly did not matter. They recognized the fact that colonialism did not inure to our nation’s collective benefit, and they were determined to end it. And, indeed, they did” He said
He made this call during his address at the 66th Independence Day Celebration parade at the Regional Youth Resource Centre, located at Adaklu-Tsrefe in the Volta Region of Ghana.
Speaking on the theme for this year’s Independence Day Celebration, “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose”, H.E. Nana Akufo Addo entreated Ghanaians to eschew things that create divisiveness and rather, constantly have the desire to seek the progress of the country regardless of the current challenges.
“The 4th Republic represents the longest period of stable constitutional governance in our history. We should be united in the goal of protecting it, for it is only its free, democratic form of governance and the intelligent management of the economy that will bring the upliftment Ghanaians want and deserve.”
President Akufo Addo further expressed his desire to see the country embark on massive expansion and development in all sectors of the country including education, health care, food security, and industrialization.
“we should continue to work to open up all parts of our country through the construction of roads, rail, ports, and airports; we should continue to work to improve accountability, efficiency and transparency in the delivery of public services; we should continue with the process of digitalization; we should continue the difficult but necessary task of ridding our environment of the menace of galamsey; and we should continue to pay our taxes, and demand that our leaders put them to good use” he continued.
He added that it is important for Ghanaians to continue to jealously guard and protect the security and integrity of the country against dangers from outside and within our borders.
President Akufo-Addo, therefore, called for the support of the entire citizenry.
In attendance were 64 officers, 1,042 men from the various security agencies, contingents from seven senior high schools and basic schools in the Ho municipality and Adaklu District, about 5,000 people from different parts of the country with the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who is the Chairman of ECOWAS as the special guest among other dignitaries.
