The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched its annual Light the World Christmas initiative in an effort to “Light the World” for the Africa West Area in Cape Coast.
The event took place at the Jubilee Park in Cape Coast and the theme for this year “peace and goodwill towards men” also features a 25-day calendar of daily service ideas starting on Thursday and goes until Christmas day.
More than 500 widows, widowers, the less privileged and physically challenged members of the society were given various food items which volunteers of the church donated as a show of love.
Elder Alfred Kyungu, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2nd Counsellor for Africa West Area encouraged each person to do small acts of kindness daily, such as visiting the sick, feeding the hungry and expressing love to family.
According to him, the purpose of the initiative is to help people to feel cared for and bring peace to the communities and the nation at large.
He therefore invited all to join with the Church this Christmas season and light the world, one person at a time, one by one, just as the Savior did.
“We invite all to join in us in showing our love for the Savior and for our neighbors in 25 excellent ways in 25 days. These are daily ideas to bring light into the lives of God’s children.” He continued.
He noted that more countries and communities will be involved with several events in different countries across West Africa already started.
In an address, the Cape Coast metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Ernest Arthur stated the theme chosen for this year is apt as many are struggling to come out of their economic difficulties.
“It is for this reason that I consider this singular act of the church of donating passes with food to the elderly in aged 55, including widows, widowers and the disabled and those genuinely in need as a true way of serving humanity.” He said
Mr. Arthur stated that the donation will go a long way to help beneficiaries feel cared for and have the peace of mind to undertake their duties.
The Light the World campaign begun on December 1st and runs through to Christmas day, December 25th providing all participants the opportunity to serve and bless others in 25 ways, in 25 days just as Jesus Christ would do.
