President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that Accra, Ghana’s capital city, has been named as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world book capital for the year 2023.
According to the President, UNESCO’s decision to declare Ghana the World Book Capital for 2023 indicates UNSECO’s acknowledgement of continuing changes in Ghana’s and Africa’s creative arts industries.
President Akufo Addo was speaking at the 215th Session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Executive Board in Paris, France.
The President notified the Executive Board that Accra had been chosen the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2023, joining the distinguished World Book Capital Cities Network.

This, he said, is recognition of the enormous strides Ghana and Africa are making in expanding Ghana’s book and creative arts industries.
“The year-long programme to celebrate this honor done us by UNESCO will commence from 23rd April 2023, which is celebrated globally as the World Book and Copyright Day. I wish to use this opportunity to invite you all to join Ghana in this year-long celebrations,” the President added.
