The Gold Coast Refinery, the first gold refinery in Ghana and the second largest in Africa, is now a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), which is part of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).

Gold Coast Refinery is the first refinery in Ghana and the West African sub-region to be accepted as a member of the JRC. The JRC is in charge of keeping an eye on the jewelry and watch industries and has certified Gold Coast Refinery to its Code of Practices.

“By the authority of the Council, Gold Coast Refinery Limited is a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council for a duration of three years,” the RJC said in a statement.

According to the Council, the refinery’s certification is in line with its 2019 Code of Practice, which is in line with the Due Diligence Guidance of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights of the United Nations.

“Achieving RJC Code of Practices certification is a continuous improvement process that requires time and investment. All the members of the GCR team have worked tirelessly to prepare for the rigorous third-party audit,” the Chairman of Gold Coast Refinery, Dr Said Deraz, said about the historic certification by the RJC.

“We have learnt a lot about our own operations, improved some of our processes, and developed and implemented new ones. We have also had strong engagement with our business partners and stakeholders.”

The Gold Coast Refinery’s certification will help Ghana formalize gold sourcing practices, with the country possessing the right to refuse gold from questionable sources.

Additionally, it helps in the development of responsible supply chains of gold from artisanal and small-scale mines as well as aids the Central Bank in meeting its target of buying 10,000 oz of gold annually under its ambitious domestic gold purchase programme.

Gold Coast Refinery, the first gold refinery in Ghana and the second biggest in Africa, is now a member of the London Bullion Market Association’s (LBMA) Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).

The accreditation of Gold Coast Refinery to the JRC’s Code of Practices makes it the first refinery in Ghana and the West African sub-region to be allowed as a member of the JRC, which is charged with monitoring the jewelry and timepieces sector.

“By the authority of the Council, Gold Coast Refinery Limited is a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council for a duration of three years,” the JRC said in a statement.

The accreditation of the Gold Coast Refinery will assist Ghana in formalizing gold sourcing methods, since the nation has the power to deny gold from questionable sources.

In addition, it aids in the creation of responsible supply chains for gold from artisanal and small-scale miners and assists the Central Bank in fulfilling its ambitious domestic gold purchase program goal of purchasing 10,000 oz of gold yearly.

Gold Coast Refinery

The Gold Coast Refinery is the first modern gold refinery in West Africa and the first in Ghana to receive a product certification license from the Government of Ghana to hallmark refined bullion of over 995 purity and to market and sell its finished products, such as refined gold bars and medallions, on both local and international bullion markets.

The refinery’s activities are organized in accordance with international standards, and it produces a product that can be marketed on international markets.

The services offered by the Gold Coast Refinery include smelting and assaying, refining, bar production, inspection and certification, hallmarking, vault services, logistics and export, capacity building, and training.

Responsible Jewellery Council

The Responsible Jewellery Council is a world leader in setting standards for the watch and jewelry industries. It works with its members all over the world to create a supply chain that is sustainable.

RJC certification helps build trust in the global jewelry industry by making sure that companies do business in a responsible way.

The Council’s inclusive and collaborative approach to standard setting and development keeps RJC standards relevant and meaningful to businesses throughout the entire jewellery and watch supply chain.

To maintain the credibility of standards, RJC’s system has been independently evaluated against ISEAL’s Codes of Good Practice, conducts open formal comment periods relating to their standards, and operates the Standards Committee as part of the RJC Governance Framework.
