Dr. Kwabena Donkor, a former Minister of Power, claims that if the government does not solve the issue of power generating capacity, Ghana would revert to the terrible days of sporadic power outages known as “dumsor” in the next two years.
He claims that, despite the rapid growth in power demand and consumption, there has been no corresponding expansion in supply capacity, placing the country at risk of a crisis.
In a media conference, the Pru East legislator asked the government to take quick action to bring in new power supply units in order to increase the country’s total capacity and effectively meet the growing electricity demand.
“This country is most likely to face load-shedding in the next two years if urgent steps are not taken from this moment to increase our power generation. Power consumption demand increases between 7% and 15% every year, and it takes a minimum of three years to bring on stream a new thermal plant. We seem to be sleepwalking into a situation of possible power outages as a result of supply limitation,” he said.
Ghana’s electricity supply has been very consistent recently, with only a few sporadic outages in various sections of the country.
This has bolstered the government’s assertion that the country’s power shortages have been resolved.
The government has previously said that it is now analyzing all agreements signed with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in order to avoid incurring unnecessary expenses.
