Over 100 stores have been destroyed by a fire outbreak at Takoradi makeshift market in the Western Region.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, resulted in the destruction of property worth thousands of cedis.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started about 2 a.m. but quickly got out of control after multiple attempts to extinguish it proved ineffective.
The National Fire Service took more than five hours to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market.
Some eyewitnesses told JoyNews’ Ina-Thalia Quansah that the intensity of the fire was due to the area’s inaccessibility.
“The Fire Service have really done. I must hand it to them,” a trader noted.
“But people have blocked the roads with their goods; that’s why the fire got this intense. If it wasn’t for that, the Service would have dealt with it immediately the fire happened,” another bystander added.
Meanwhile, Kwabena Okyre-Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister who also serves as the Acting Municipal Chief Executive of Takoradi, paid a visit to the area after the fire was put out.
He stated that the assembly will assure the restoration of the impacted stores this week as a matter of urgency.
