According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, several Ghanaian students in Ukraine who were supposed to be evacuated have refused to show up.
According to the Ministry, the students who indicated a desire to be evacuated and for whose flight tickets were booked on their behalf did not appear at the airport on the planned day.
“The Ministry has noted with grave concern the refusal of some Ghanaian students to show up at the airport after they have expressed their willingness to be evacuated. This has resulted in the Government purchasing air tickets which remain unused as well as paying for COVID-19 tests for persons with no intention of traveling,” a statement from the Ministry on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, said.
As a result, it was underlined that only Ghanaians ready to be evacuated should confirm their participation in order to avoid wasting public funds.
It went on to say that the government will only cover the cost of two nights’ hotel accommodation for Ghanaians who are received by its officials and representatives and accommodated in hotels in Ukraine and other European nations.
It also cautioned that the government’s duties to anyone who decline the offer to be assisted in returning home would end when the two nights hotel stay expired.
According to the statement, 181 Ghanaians have successfully returned home from Ukraine.
It was also stated that several Ghanaians who were trapped near the Russian border in Sumy have begun their trek to Myrhorod, where they would be moved to western border cities for further transit to neighboring nations.
The government also thanked the different National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in the region, as well as the Church of Pentecost and other Religious Bodies, Governments, Humanitarian Organizations, and individuals who helped make the evacuation possible.
