The second group of Ghanaians who escaped to Poland from the troubled Ukraine is expected to arrive in Ghana today, Friday.
On March 1, 2022, the nation welcomed home the first set of students evacuated from Ukraine after Russia invaded the country.
According to Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, there are over 500 Ghanaian students in Ukraine who have left the nation and want to return home.
Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has praised the government’s efforts in airlifting the students into the nation.
According to the Minister, Ghana is the first nation to successfully evacuate some of its residents in the middle of Ukraine’s continuing crisis.
“The government is determined to make sure that your colleagues who want to be evacuated are evacuated. Information coming in is that Ghana is the first country that has evacuated her compatriots. Ghana is doing its best to encourage Russia to stop the attack and atrocities on the citizens of Ukraine,” he told the evacuees.
Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine early Thursday morning.
Despite demands from international leaders to de-escalate, Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, declared the military action at dawn.
Explosions have been reported near major Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kyiv.
Recent tensions have emerged as a consequence of Russia’s resistance to Ukraine’s efforts to join European institutions such as Nato and the EU.
