The Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has banned motorcycle riding in the Bawku Municipality.
The Regional Co-ordinating Council said in a press release issued by Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu that their instruction arises from the fragile nature of security in the area.
“The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has examined the security situation and its volatile nature in the Bawku Township and with immediate effect imposes a ban on riding of motorbikes in the Bawku Municipality and its environs,” part of the January 23 statement read.
As a result, both sexes are prohibited from riding motorcycles in the region.
According to the statement, “this ban does not include motor tricycles.”
This comes after the murder of Bawku Police Officer Regina Angenu. On Sunday, an unknown attacker assaulted the Constable of Paga Police Station.
She was shot in the groin, according to the police report. Constable Regina died while receiving treatment at the Presbyterian Mission Hospital.
The deceased’s remains have been sent to Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
Meanwhile, MUSEC has been urged to execute the regulation as soon as possible.
Previously, REGSEC prohibited the usage of a motorcycle by two or more males in the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas.
The decision to prevent guys from riding with their fellow males was made during an emergency meeting on Thursday, January 6, to discuss the region’s security situation.
The prohibition covered “a woman riding a motorbike and picking a man on the same motorbike.”
Females, on the other hand, were authorized to ride with a female colleague.
