The Confederation of African Football CAF has announced that Video Assistant Referee, commonly known as VAR, will be used to monitor all the 54 games that will take place in Cameroon during the 2022 African Cup of Nations.
The decision to use VAR was finalized on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021, to reduce errors from the referees and ensure fairness, balance, and accuracy during the ongoing tournament.
In a statement released on Tuesday, CAF says they have informed all the 24 teams that will be taking part in the game to be prepared to use the technology from the beginning of the competition right up to the end.

Cameroon will be the first country where the video assistant technology will be used at the beginning of the group stage as compared to previous competitions where it was only used at the knockout stages.
The competition was to take place in 2021 but due to the outbreak of the deadly Covid_19 pandemic, the competition was postponed to January 2022 also to give time for Cameroon to effectively prepare to host the competition.
The 2017 African Cup of Nations was initially supposed to be organized by Cameroon but due to inadequate preparation, the tournament was handed over to Gabon.
CAF says Cameroon is now well prepared to host the competition, and it will begin on January 9th, 2022, and end on February 6th, 2022.
