Michael Kwei Nunoo, a cleaner who stole five Dell Optiplex (All-in-one) computer sets valued at GH70,000 from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), was sentenced to 12 months in jail by an Accra Circuit Court.

Nunoo, who was accused of stealing, pled guilty. Nunoo was convicted on his own plea by the Court presided over by Mr. K. K. Obiri Yeboah.

The Court took into account the fact that the accused was a “family man” with two children, ages three and one.

It was observed that after the accused was given bail by the police, he appeared to court willingly and that the laptops were also collected.

The Court, on the other hand, emphasized that the crime preferred against the accused was a felony and sentenced him to 12 months in jail with hard labor.

Nunoo sobbed when he learned of his conviction.

According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Dennis Terkpertey, the complainant was Mr. Paul O. Annan, the Greater Accra Sector Command of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s  (GRA) Customs Division.

According to Chief Inspector Terkpertey, the accused, who is now a prisoner, was a casual worker stationed at Jamestown, Accra Sector, GRA, and a Chorkor resident.

According to the prosecution, on or before August 19, this year, the Office (GRA) identified the theft of five brand new Dell (all-in-one) Optiplex computers valued at GH70,000 that the Authority had assigned to the James-Town Collection Point and were to be installed.

According to the prosecution, the situation was reported to the police, and investigations led to Nunoo’s detention.

During questioning, Nunoo admitted to selling the five laptops to one Abeka at a shop in Chorkor for GH1,000.

According to the prosecution, when he brought the police to the stated Abeka, his business was closed and he could not be found.

The accused family members, on the other hand, “produced” the five computers. The prosecution said that measures were being undertaken to apprehend the aforementioned Abeka for dishonestly receiving.
