General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah has debunked the notion that the NDC is anti-taxation.
Speaking at a public forum to discuss the 2022 budget and economic policy, Mr. Aseidu Nketsia indicated that “if we are not supporting taxation, how else do we intend to develop this nation? I want to let everybody know that the NDC is not against taxation.”
The forum held on Wednesday and dubbed “what does the 2022 budget mean for the ordinary Ghanaian”, was organized to deliberate the NDC’s stance on what it terms as the Awudie budget for 2022.
This comes on the back of the 2022 budget which was rejected and subsequently accepted by the majority in parliament some days ago.
According to Mr. Aseidu Nketsia, taxes on the citizenry must be imposed proportionally to avoid any hardships on taxpayers.
“..our principle of taxation is each according to his means. So those who have bigger means will pay more than those who do not have. So whiles we are supportive of taxation we are very conscious about what type of taxation and how that taxation is implemented because if you put in taxation measures that work to put the greatest burden on the people who are already sinking, then you are not helping to build a welfare society.”
The NDC believes that the current state of the budget would rather increase the tax burden and raise the cost of living for Ghanaians.
On his part, the MP for Bolga Central and a ranking member of the finance committee in parliament, Isaac Adongo called on Ghanaians to rejection the 2022 budget and economic policy in its current state.
He blamed Ghana’s current economic predicaments on the current government’s incompetence saying the ruling government has not well managed the economy in the last 5 years.
In spite of the concession made by government on the 2022 budget, the NDC said Ghanaians must rally behind them to ensure the budget is not approved in its current state.
