The Ghana Education Service (GES) has received budgetary approval from the Ministry of Finance to hire nearly 16,000 freshly educated teachers.
“Financial clearance is hereby granted to the Hon. Minister of Education to enable the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to recruit sixteen thousand, eight hundred and fifty (16,850) newly trained teachers for the service,” a statement signed by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Abena Osei-Asare said.
The GES Director-General has also been urged to guarantee that teachers’ paperwork is handled in a timely manner so that wages may be paid.
“The Controller and Accountant-General is requested to effect the payment of salaries of the newly trained teachers and make appropriate deductions of Social Security and Income Tax to SSNIT and the Domestic Tax Division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) respectively.”
Over the years, timely payment of teachers has been a key source of worry.
Last year, newly recruited teachers petitioned the Ministry of Education to resolve their arrears.
They alleged at the time that they had only been paid a month out of their five-month wage arrears after being recruited in December 2019.
Prior to their employment, these teachers, who were then serving as national service personnel, vowed to sue the National Service Secretariat (NSS) for improper deductions from their allowances.
