The police administration has denied deploying officers to arrest Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu when he was at church on Sunday.

“Stories circulating that some Police personnel had been dispatched to arrest the MP at a church on Sunday, October 31, 2021, are untrue,” police said in a statement.

According to several National Democratic Congress supporters, police surrounded Mr. Sosu’s church, Believer’s House of Prayer Ministries, in an effort to make an arrest. The pastor of the church verified this as well.

According to the police, there may have been some plainclothes officers in the church, but they were there “for intelligence purposes, not to effect an arrest.”

The police department said that it will “continue to investigations” into the incident.

The controversy surrounding Mr. Sosu stems from a protest against bad roads in his constituency.

During the demonstration, several demonstrators blocked highways and burned tires.

Police have argued that some criminal activity occurred during the protest and have asked Mr. Sosu to help them with their investigations.

Police also said that three other people have been questioned in connection with this case and that they “shall continue to use all legal means to interrogate all other suspects, including the Honourable MP for Madina.”

Mr. Sosu said that during the protest, several police officers attempted to arrest him.

Despite the fact that demonstrators had blocked roadways, Mr. Sosu claimed that no arrests were warranted since he had followed proper procedure in organizing the protest.

He also cited his privileges as a legislator.

As a result, he filed a formal complaint in Parliament charging two police commanding officers with contempt of Parliament.

The complaint against the two police officers was sent to the Privileges Committee of Parliament by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

Mr. Sosu’s complaint named two officers: ACP Isaac Kojo Asante, the Greater Accra Regional Operations Commander, and ACP Eric Winful, the Adentan Divisional Commander.
