Giant advertisements in English and French across a major road in Jerusalem accuse visiting Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi of “corrupt anti-Semitic discrimination”, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reports.
The president has been on a visit to Israel, the first by a Congolese leader since 1985. The JTA reports that his motorcade would likely pass under the huge billboards during the three-day trip that ends on Thursday.
It is not clear what exactly the adverts are referring to.
Mr. Tshisekedi has not commented.
The JTA suggests that there could be a link with a leading opponent of the Congolese president, Moïse Katumbi.
Mr. Katumbi, whose father was Jewish and born in Greece, may have plans to run in the next presidential election in 2023 and a bill currently being considered would bar him, JTA reports.
It says that the bill would ensure that to qualify to run for president both of the candidate’s parents would have to have been born in the country.
However, the JTA contacted the people behind the billboard who would not comment on the reasons for the campaign.
