The Omanhene of Twifo Hemang, Otumfuo Amoah Sasraku IV has called on the government to help put up a Girls’ School at Twifo Hemang as a way to curb teenage pregnancy which is prevalent in the Lower Denkyira District.
According to him, because there is no Girls’ school in the district to serve as a model to train the teenage girls and equip them with the necessary skills so they can have a better future, these girls after completing Senior High School are lured to engage in early sex which at the end leads to pregnancy and this he described as worrying.
Otumfuo Amoah Sasraku IV made the appeal yesterday when President Akufo Addo paid a courtesy call on him and the people of Twifo Hemang as part of his two-day tour of the Central Region.
“One issue that I think is a bit disgraceful is the issue of teenage pregnancy. We heard that our district has the highest cases of teenage pregnancy in the Central Region. We were terrified when we heard the issue. It means perhaps there is something we are not doing right here”, he said.
He further said “If our district has the highest number of teenage pregnancy cases, then we the traditional leaders must act quickly. What we thought about is the establishment of a Girls’ School that most of the teenage girls can enroll in as soon as they complete Senior High School.”
On his part, President Akufo Addo assured the chief and his people that he will consult the Minister of Education to find a solution to their request.
“The issue you raised about establishing a Girls’ School is very good. We need to plan towards it. If this area records the highest number of teenage pregnancies, then something must be done about it. We can’t let it go on like that. I will sit with the Minister of Education to see how he will also see to the establishment of a Girls’ School here,” he said.
