A Senior lecturer with the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Akwasi Ayanful is urging Ghanaian women to make screening of their breast a priority as the mortality rate of breast cancer in the country is on the high side.
Dr. Ayanful indicated that Ghana like many sub Saharan African countries have about 48% of women diagnosed with breast cancer dying; a figure he described as on the high side as compared to the worldwide statistics.
“The Statistics in 2018 show that over 1.7 million women worldwide were diagnosed with breast cancer. Out of that about 500,000 died, so that gives a world average of 29% of women diagnose with breast cancer die. In Sub Saharan Africa it is about 48%.
Speaking exclusively to ATL FM NEWS, Dr. Ayanful said some factors put the Sub Saharan African countries including Ghana at a disadvantaged point.

He noted that the lack of facilities, lack of personnel, early onset of breast cancer, non-responsive to drugs and aggressiveness of the disease as factors that endanger the lives of sub Saharan Africans.
To this end, he urged women through the support of men to make frequent screening of their breast their top most priority to ensure early detection and easy management to save their lives.
He said when detected early, affected women can have a timely intervention to save their breast and their lives as well.
