Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has hinted that this year’s Girls in ICT programme would benefit about 3,000 girls.
Taking her turn on Sunday at the Ministry of Information’s weekly media engagements with different ministries and sectors throughout the country in Accra, the minister said that despite the project’s delay, government remains confident of meeting the projected completion date.
“In 2021, we’ve projected to train 3,000 girls in three regions. We starting late though but by the end of the year, we would have obtained this objective. Nine districts in Western North and Prestea Huni Valley which missed out on the Western Region training have been selected to present a 1000 girls to be trained in basic computer skills, fundamentals of programming, scratch and HTML.”
This training, she said, would prepare students to flourish in the new world of work, as conventional occupations are progressively replaced by possibilities provided by these technologies, adding that “there is a real livelihood to be made if they take up careers in ICT in the future and focus on it.”
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful noted that the Ministry of Communications has finished training the first batch of 500 girls and that the second group of 500 girls will begin training on Monday, September 6, to end on September 11.

SIM Card Registration
Mad. Owusu-Ekuful also stated that the six-month-long nationwide SIM card re-registration operation would begin in early October this year.
She stated that the decision to re-register SIM cards was made in response to increasing usage of communication services after the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic, as well as to promote E-education.
According to her, individuals may register their SIM cards solely using their Ghanaian identification card.
“Only the National ID card, the Ghana card, issued to an individual shall be used for registration of SIM cards of citizens, foreign residents in Ghana and foreigners staying in Ghana for more than 90 days”.
The ministry Communications and Digitalization together with all its stakeholders will launch the National SIM Card registration exercise across the country next month.
