The Koforidua District Court B in the Eastern Region has remanded into police custody Samuel Kofi Adjei, alias Jamalo, who is suspected of being the driver of the Member of Parliament for Suhum who was arrested for inflicting machete wounds on the NPP Communications Officer for Lower West Akyem, Bernard Kwasi Amoani.
Jamalo, who reported himself to Suhum police on Wednesday with a party executive, was detained and transported to the CID Regional Headquarters on Thursday morning before being charged before the Cocoase Magistrate Court presided over by His Lordship Eric Denin.
Despite his attorneys’ appeal, Samuel Kofi Agyei, who has been charged with inflicting injury with an offensive weapon in violation of section 70 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), was refused bail.
The Chief State Attorney claimed that since the nature of the offense is serious, the accused may not appear to face trial if given bail.
His Lordship Eric Denin, who invited both counsels to briefly address the bench, subsequently postponed the matter until Tuesday, September 7th, 2021, for the decision on the bail application.
Background
After a disagreement at a funeral, Jamalo allegedly assaulted a member of the NPP communications team.
The misunderstanding, which ended in a fight between the MP’s supporters and a potential challenger, also injured another party member, who was subsequently treated and released at the Suhum Government Hospital.
According to the Suhum Police Command, the victim of the assault, who suffered severe knife cuts to the forehead, is responding to treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital’s emergency department.
Another victim, who received lip bruising, has since been treated and released.
Meanwhile, the Suhum Municipal Officer has disputed that the attacker is his driver.
