Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, Minister of Health, is presently on a two-week leave to attend to personal matters.
This request was approved by Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.
He formally started his leave last week.
Earlier reports said that the Minister had resigned, however, this allegation has been refuted by those close to Agyeman-Manu.
The Health Minister has come under fire for violating procurement procedures while attempting to acquire Sputnik V vaccinations for Ghana.
He signed the deal without the consent of Parliament or the Cabinet. In addition, he did not obtain permission from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA).
The Attorney General has said that he advised against the transaction.
Last week, the Minority in Parliament demanded that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo quickly remove the Minister of Health, claiming that he is unfit for duty.
They claim he breached the 1992 constitution and his oath of office by attempting to get vaccinations via intermediaries without consulting Parliament or the cabinet.
“It is beyond any reasonable question that the minister violated his oath of office, and he also failed to respect our country’s constitution and laws.”
“I must say that the Minister should be sanctioned. He must be removed by the president. He is not fit to occupy the office of a minister of state and must therefore be removed from office henceforth, failing which this House must pass a vote of censure on the minister,” said minority chief whip, Muntaka Mubarak.
They also challenged the minister on his assertion that no payment was made in the transaction, despite the fact that the committee’s findings indicated that money was paid.
