Thirty-six (36) lives have so far been lost to Covid-19 in the Central Region since the disease was first recorded in the country in March 2020.
Presently, the region’s number of active cases stands at one hundred and twenty-one (121).
This was disclosed by the Central Regional Director of Health, Dr Akosua Owusu Sarpong at a press briefing on Tuesday where she indicated there is an exponential increase in cases of Covid-19 associated with hospitalization due to the delta variant in the region.
“As of 16th July, we had 31 active cases. Then on the 24th July the cases increased to 81 active cases and current as of 27th July, we had 121 active cases and this is associated with hospitalization and unfortunately, we have lost some people.” She said
Highlighting the challenges that the service is faced in the wake of the surge of Covid-19 cases, Dr Owusu Sarpong made particular mention of the pressure on the supply of oxygen to patients with respiratory challenges and the toll of such pressure on health workers.

“As a Regional Health Directorate and Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee, we have met and have put in place certain things to help curb the spread of the virus in the region. However, we all know what is supposed to do, that is adherence to the protocols.” She added.
Dr. Owusu Sarpong noted that there are currently no records of Covid-19 in senior high schools in the region, however; one case of the delta variant has been reported from one university.
