The Government says it is strengthening measures and retooling the security services at the country’s borders to ensure the safety of citizens in the wake of worrying trends of terrorist attacks in the neighboring countries.
In recent times, Insecurity and terror attacks across West Africa have expanded into areas previously considered safe.
Speaking on the ATLANTIC WAVE, Government spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, Kojo Frimpong noted that government has been alerted on the growing incidents of piracy and terrorism drawing closer to Ghana and has since adopted measures to forestall any intended attack.
“On the South side of the sea and to the Northern side of the borders we are confronted by acts of terrorism by pirates and rebels trying to enter the country, so what the president has decided in his wisdom is to build fifteen ford operating bases from Hamile to Tatale across the Northern border. Now, these ford operating bases will be populated by military men so they are going to act as operating barracks for the country”.
He further said according to the law, it is not the military that checks the borders, adding that it is the immigration service that is supposed to do these checks.
Mr. Frimpong also urged the general public to be vigilant and forthcoming with information on terror activities in their day-to-day activities.
“All security experts will tell you that security is a shared responsibility, so we are pleading with the citizens of Ghana if you see something say something. If you are suspicious about some people who moved into to your neighborhood, always trying to incite people, trying to recruit them, once you become aware, say something, share it with the police and by all means, it will be investigated”, he said.
“When acts of terrorism start happening in this country as we know it now, our peace will be altered forever, our lives will take a dramatic turn for the worst if we allow this thing to go on in this country”.
