The Ghana Statistical Service has stated that the census mop-up operation, which was set to conclude on July 18, 2021, would be extended.
According to a statement from the Service, the extension will last 12 days, from July 19th to July 30th, 2021.
Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician, told the press on Monday that the exercise, which is approximately 94% complete in certain regions, would give the GSS enough time to fulfill its objective of counting every Ghanaian.
Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim said last week that the Greater Accra Region had the least amount of coverage in the exercise.
The North East had the greatest percentage of anticipated households at 92 percent, while the Greater Accra Region had the lowest percentage at 55 percent.
“In fact, we’ve received data from 70 percent of the areas we gathered data from during the first part of the exercise, with the exception of the Greater Accra Regions,” Prof. Annim added.
As of July 11, 181 of the 272 statistical districts defined by the Ghana Statistical Service have completed data collecting.
“Our main concern is to concentrate on the Greater Accra Region because there are certain particular districts in the Greater Accra Region where data input is very limited,” he said.
Among the lowest-performing districts were the Ga West, Ga North, Ayawaso West, Adentan Ga East, Ledzokuku, La Nkwantan Madina, Kpone Katamanso, Shai Osudoku, and Tema West districts.
The Service attributed the reluctance of households to participate in the data collection, “specifically diplomats, foreigners in gated communities, high-level government officials and political leaders, households in medium to high-class residential areas.”
The Government Statistician also said there was an “unwillingness of communities to participate in the census due to boundary disputes.”
