The leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has indicated that if the government fails to convey intentions to pay interest on their tier-2 arrears by end of day today, Monday, July 19, 2021, the strike will continue, but this time as a full-fledged one.
They claim that the suspension of the previous strike was based on the government’s own deadline of July 19 to address the problems.
Members at all fourteen public institutions would lay down their tools if they do not hear from government, according to the association’s National Chairman, Zakaria Mohammed, since they have received no additional guarantees that their issues will be addressed.
“If the deadline passes without a response from the administration, we will go on a full-fledged strike… They established their own timeline, stating that they may utilize the 30th of June to the 19th of July to resolve all of the issues that were agreed upon, and we stopped our strike. So, why should we wait any longer if the government is unable to keep its word? He said, “We must return to strike.”
Zakaria Mohammed criticized the government’s efforts to disregard their desire for a more favorable working environment.
“To be honest, government has been dismissive of all of our requests, and it has taken senior university employees for granted for far too long.”
On May 18, 2021, the Association called a strike in protest of the government’s refusal to pay its members’ Tier 2 pension payments.
