The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has said that it completely supports the closure of the Achimota School in Accra in order to limit the spread of the new delta strain and COVID-19.
Ghana Health Service (GHS) and Ghana Education Service (GES) have reached an agreement to close Achimota School for the next two weeks.
No one will be permitted to enter or exit the school, as per order to the school’s officials.
This comes on the heels of the discovery of the fast-spreading Delta form of Covid-19 in a small number of afflicted students.
Dr. Titus Beyuo, the GMA’s Deputy General Secretary, said on the Sunrise morning program on 3FM that it is a fair choice to make.
“It is a reasonable course of action to take and the reason is this: if you follow how the disease spread it only moves when the people who have it move so in an attempt to contain it, I know the health service is doing excellent work with the contact tracing there; they are tracing all the students there and looking at who they have come into contact with and monitoring them so if they allow over 150 people having been confirmed and a lot who have recovered which is very good news for us, so if they allow a lot of movement we are going to have problems with contact tracing”.
According to Dr.Beyuo, students react differently to the illness than adults do, resulting in the decision to restrict their mobility.
He thinks the quarantine level may be beneficial and that the Ghana Health Service would adhere to good public health principles focused at safeguarding lives.
Around 135 students were found to have the novel variation, but 89 subsequently recovered.
Authorities were notified of an outbreak of the viral disease at the school after three children became sick with influenza-like symptoms between Monday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 16.
