The three-member ministerial committee established to investigate last week’s disturbances in Ejura, Ashanti Region, is set to convene today, Monday, July 5, 2021.
The committee’s members, Justice George Kingsley Koomson [Chairman of the Committee], Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso, a security analyst, and Juliet Amoah, Executive Director of Penplusbytes, are expected to arrive in Ejura later today to begin work.
Today’s assignment is unclear since the committee is expected to work fast in order to meet President Akufo-Addo’s 10-day deadline.
The committee is expected to submit its conclusions to the government at the end of its work.
Background
The President’s decision came after a social activist, Ibrahim Muhammed, was killed on Monday, June 28, 2021, while returning home on his motorbike in Ejura, Sekyedumase District, Ashanti Region.
He is said to have been murdered as a result of his social activism, which some believed was making the government unpopular.
The 45-year-old has a reputation for being vocal on both local and national issues through his Facebook page.
His family says that he had received threats before the attack as a result of his activism.
He was transported to the Ejura Government Hospital and subsequently to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he died at 12 p.m. on June 28.
Three individuals have since been arrested and charged in connection with his death by police in the Ashanti Region.
Protests in Ejura and outpourings of online outrage followed Ibrahim Muhammed’s killing.
On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, he was put to rest.
Following the funeral, a group of locals in Ejura were confronted by a team of police and military officers, resulting in the death of two people shot by some soldiers. According to the police, the demonstrators became unruly and began pelting security officers with stones.
“One died on the spot before he was brought to the hospital, so we just confirmed the death. One other died 10 minutes after resuscitation,” Dr. Mensah Manye, the Medical Superintendent Ejura Government Hospital said.
