A Technical Advisor with the Ministry of Works and Housing, Dr. John Kissi has disclosed that government is implementing flood control programmes to improve settlement resilience across the hotspot flood areas in the country next year.

According to him, a total of GHC450 million has been invested in flood mitigation measures in the past four years and government is committed to mitigating flooding adding that several interventions have been rolled out to decrease the incidence flooding in the country.

Some of these interventions include; drainage works and construction of culverts in Kwesimintsim, Hataso, Agbogba, Adenta, and Madina-Redco as well as sea defence walls in New Takoradi, Axim, Anomabo, Cape Coast and Elmina.

In an interview monitored by ATLFMNEWS, Dr. Kissi explained that in as much as climate change and developmental challenges are impacting on the environment, government’s investment in flood mitigation over the years should be enough to curb the current flooding difficulties in the country.

He said “the flooding that we experience is not big as much as we use to before and if we were to have the normal flood events as we’ve been having then I think that the significant investment that the government has made should make a huge difference” adding “we should not see so much flooding”.

He further intimated that government is pursuing financing mechanisms for flood intervention implementation process to commence in the hotspot areas.

“We are already thinking about 2022. We will put our proposal together for the continuation of the finance ministry and we are hoping that we will get commencement sooner than later so we can begin the process of developing or designing the schemes of the projects ahead of time and get them into it before the next raining season”, he hinted.
